Francophone Africa: NEC XON’s Growth Agenda

Picture
For technology providers looking to build sustainable capacity across Africa, the continent’s regulatory, commercial, infrastructure and business cultures diversity make local capability increasingly important. This is particularly true in Francophone Africa, where language and market complexity can create barriers to meaningful engagement. NEC XON is deliberately strengthening its capability in French-speaking markets, moving beyond an opportunistic approach to expansion towards building a sustained regional presence.
Building capability in Francophone Africa
The latest phase of this strategy is focused on Senegal, where NEC XON is establishing dedicated French-language sales and pre-sales capability to support customers and technology partners across French-speaking West Africa. This builds on existing French-language capability in the Democratic Republic of Congo and forms part of a broader investment in regional expertise. The rationale goes beyond simply having people who can communicate in French.

While much of the technical work in the technology industry is conducted in English, successful business relationships involve considerably more than technical delivery. Customer engagement, sales, contracting, financial processes, regulatory requirements and relationship management all benefit from people who understand the language and context in which customers operate.

“Language is only one part of the equation,” says Gary Munro, VP Africa Operations, NEC XON. “What we're really building is the ability to engage with customers and partners in a way that's relevant to their markets. Having French-language sales and pre-sales capability gives us a stronger foundation, but the bigger objective is to develop the local understanding and relationships that allow us to support customers over the long term.”

From opportunity-led expansion to regional capability
For technology companies operating across Africa, remote technical expertise can address many requirements. But local presence remains important when it comes to understanding customers, navigating markets and developing partnerships.

NEC XON has already established regional capability across East, West and Southern Africa, including operations in Kenya, Nigeria and Namibia. These regional hubs enable the business to combine specialist technology expertise with an understanding of local market conditions. The Francophone strategy takes that principle further.

By establishing dedicated French-language capability in Senegal while building on resources already available in the Democratic Republic of Congo, NEC XON is creating a platform from which it can engage more effectively across Francophone markets. The approach is intended to remove some of the practical barriers that have historically made expansion into French-speaking markets more difficult.

“This isn't about putting a French-speaking salesperson into a market and calling the job done,” says Munro. “It's about building the capability around that person - the technical expertise, the commercial understanding, the partnerships and the relationships - so that we can operate as a credible long-term participant in the market.”

Senegal as a regional platform
The investment in Senegal provides NEC XON with a base from which to support customers and technology partners across French-speaking West Africa. Combined with existing French-language resources in the DRC, it forms part of a deliberate effort to establish a stronger and more sustainable presence across Francophone Africa. This represents a shift in approach: rather than waiting for opportunities to emerge and then assembling the resources required to pursue them, NEC XON is investing in capability ahead of demand. That distinction matters in markets where trust and relationships are central to technology adoption.

Customers increasingly expect technology providers not only to supply products and technical expertise, but to understand their businesses, their operating environments and the realities of their markets. A stronger local capability allows NEC XON to be more accessible to customers and partners while making its wider technology portfolio available to a broader range of markets.

Making regional understanding a competitive advantage
Africa's diversity is often described as a challenge for technology providers. It can also be a competitive advantage for organisations willing to invest in understanding it. The Francophone expansion reflects
NEC XON's broader belief that successful growth in Africa requires more than a strong technology portfolio. It requires people who understand the markets in which that technology is being deployed, relationships that extend beyond individual projects and the willingness to invest in capability for the long term.

“Technology can be delivered across borders, but relationships can't be outsourced,” says Munro. “If we're serious about building a sustainable business across Africa, we have to invest in the people and capabilities that allow us to become part of the markets we serve.”
