Main purpose of the job
To support the organisation in maintaining a safe, compliant working environment by implementing, monitoring and improving health, safety, quality and environmental processes in line with applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation, company requirements, ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 9001:2015 management system principles. The SHEQ Officer is responsible for site safety files, inspections, audits, hazard identification and risk assessment, incident investigations, training and awareness, and promoting a proactive SHEQ culture across operational and project sites.
Key Responsibilities
Includes but is not limited to:
Implement, maintain and monitor health, safety, quality and environmental policies, procedures, safe work practices and site-specific safety files.
Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, applicable regulations, company requirements and relevant ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 9001:2015 management system requirements.
Conduct workplace inspections, safety audits, compliance assessments, hazard identification and risk assessments, and follow up on corrective and preventive actions.
Conduct incident, accident and near-miss investigations, compile reports and support implementation of corrective actions.
Conduct various site visits as per business requirements where applicable.
Facilitate health and safety inductions, toolbox talks, internal training and awareness programmes.
Monitor employee and contractor compliance with health and safety requirements, including correct use of Personal Protective Equipment as well conduct subcontractor audits and vetting.
Participate in Health and Safety Committee meetings, emergency preparedness planning, evacuation procedures and emergency drills.
Liaise with regulatory authorities, auditors and internal stakeholders during inspections, audits and compliance reviews where required.
Support internal, external and certification audits for ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 9001:2015.
Provide regular SHEQ reporting to the Operations Manager and Head of SHEQ, including key risks, actions, trends and compliance status.
Skills and Experience required
Competencies
Implementation and Compliance of Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and associated regulations.
Solid knowledge ISO 45001:2018 Safety Management System
Solid knowledge ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System
Internal Training and Facilitating
Health and Safety management systems and best practices.
Incident investigation methodologies.
Hazard identification and risk assessment principles.
Emergency preparedness and response procedures.
Safety auditing processes and statutory compliance requirements.
Strong relationship building techniques, tactics and overall communication abilities

Experience
Minimum 3 years' experience in an Occupational Health & Safety role.
Proven experience conducting workplace inspections, safety audits, and incident investigations.
Experience implementing and monitoring health and safety management systems.
Experience delivering health and safety training and awareness programmes.
Previous experience within engineering, construction, manufacturing, industrial, or technical environments is advantageous.
Experience & Qualifications
Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field.
